After a seven-year hiatus, the highly anticipated collaboration between Nike and renowned designer Riccardo Tisci has made a surprising return. This time, however, the duo is shifting gears from their iconic sneaker collections to a luxury accessory: a $500 USD leather handbag named The Mercer Bag.
Part of Nike’s SS25 lineup, the bag marks a new direction for the partnership. In contrast to Tisci’s bold, attention-grabbing designs at Givenchy and Burberry, the Mercer Bag is relatively understated, featuring a solid black pebble leather body. Subtle branding elements include Nike’s logo debossed on the front flap, along with Tisci’s signature metal “R.T.” wordmark placed on the corner of the bag and strap. Golden hardware completes the design, offering both style and functionality with an adjustable strap.
The collaboration between Tisci and Nike began in 2014, with a memorable Air Force 1 collection featuring jacquard ankle straps. Over the years, they’ve released several sneakers and boots, including reinterpretations of the Nike Air Cast 1 and the NikeLab Dunk Lux High. Their last release, a mid-top Air Max 97 and Air Force 1 High, dropped in 2018.
The move to a luxury handbag for their first collaboration in nearly a decade reflects broader shifts in the fashion and menswear industries. While sneakers remain a key interest for younger buyers, luxury bags have seen a rise in popularity, particularly among men. According to The RealReal’s 2024 report, searches for men’s handbags grew by an impressive 900% year-over-year, signaling a growing acceptance of luxury bags among male consumers.
At the same time, Nike has faced challenges in maintaining momentum, with overexposure of popular sneaker releases and critiques of a perceived lack of innovation. The company is also looking to expand its appeal to female consumers, recently announcing a joint venture with Kim Kardashian’s shapewear brand, SKIMS, called NikeSKIMS.
The launch of the Mercer Bag could signal Nike’s intention to cast a wider net and tap into the growing luxury accessory market. Nike has previously experimented with hybrid-luxe strategies, such as its collaboration with French designer Jacquemus to create a Swoosh-shaped handbag priced at $400 USD.
Set to release on March 1, the Mercer Bag will be available at select retailers, and this launch might be just the beginning of a new luxury venture from Nike. Stay tuned for more updates on the release and any potential upcoming collections.
