This past weekend in Shanghai, designer Nigo introduced an exciting collaboration with Mercedes-Benz and Moncler at the City of Genius event, celebrating the vibrant spirit of the ’90s New York hip-hop scene. Reflecting on the era, Nigo remarked, “Only successful people can drive Mercedes,” highlighting how this luxury brand was a hallmark of success among musicians during that time.
As part of this collaboration, Nigo not only designed a stunning car but also a capsule collection that encapsulates the essence of that influential decade. The centerpiece of the showcase was the Project G-Class Past II Future, a reimagined version of the classic G-Class from the ‘90s, now fully restored with a modern twist. This limited-edition vehicle will be available in just 20 units, making it a rare gem for collectors.
In addition to the car, Nigo crafted a Moncler x Nigo capsule collection featuring bomber jackets that sport illustrations of the vehicle, bridging the gap between high fashion and automotive design. Drawing inspiration from vintage campaign imagery from both Moncler and Mercedes, Nigo aimed to channel the cultural and creative energy of the ’90s, a decade he considers pivotal for its artistic impact.
The City of Genius event was held in an expansive 30,000-square-foot shipyard, where Nigo transformed a small building into a dynamic representation of his vision. A striking art installation, perched atop the roof, served as a focal point, inviting guests to engage with the experience. Illuminated by a massive billboard proclaiming, “Where the future is driven by the past,” the venue buzzed with excitement as attendees danced, posed beside the car, and expressed their desire for the stylish collection.
Nigo’s collaboration not only celebrates the luxury of Mercedes and the artistry of Moncler but also pays homage to the cultural legacy of the ’90s hip-hop scene, proving that while only a few may drive the iconic car, many can embrace the fashionable spirit it represents.
