From Cybersecurity to Entrepreneurship: Building a Business on Security
Before co-founding PENGUIN, Denis co-founded and led operations at an IT Managed Services Provider (MSP), where she honed her skills in leadership, operational strategy, and customer-centric technology solutions. This experience gave her a deep understanding of security challenges faced by businesses, ultimately guiding her to launch a VoIP phone service company that prioritizes security and privacy.
Recognizing the shortcomings of traditional telecommunications in protecting users from modern cyber threats, Denis and her partner built PENGUIN to bridge the gap between security and convenience. By leveraging her expertise in social engineering and OSINT (Open-Source Intelligence) and her partner’s expertise in network engineering and infrastructure, they designed a VoIP platform that integrates advanced encryption and fraud protection to safeguard communications.

A Life Shaped by Resilience and Innovation
Denis’s entrepreneurial journey has been anything but conventional. Born in South Africa and raised across Southern Africa and California, she experienced constant change and adaptation from a young age. It was at a rare computer science program at an all-girls Catholic high school in South Africa that she first discovered her passion for hacking and security concepts.
However, her path took an unexpected turn when she faced online exploitation as a teenager. The experience led her to rethink her future and rebuild from the ground up. Moving back to the U.S. with no clear direction, she took on minimum-wage jobs before eventually finding her way into business, technology, and intelligence work.
Her turning point came when she discovered DEF CON’s Social Engineering Village (SEVillage), where she entered the SECTF competition. Winning first place opened doors into the cybersecurity industry and set her on a path toward becoming a leading expert in social engineering. Now, six years later, Alethe is a valuable member of a red team at a leading offensive security company.
Beyond Cybersecurity: Passion, Creativity, and Community
Outside of cybersecurity and entrepreneurship, Denis is a passionate mentor, educator, and lifelong enthusiast of creativity and strategic thinking. She dedicates time to teaching security concepts to students and professionals, breaking down complex cybersecurity topics into accessible lessons.
She is also a mother, comic book fan, and 90s pop culture enthusiast, with a love for collectibles, animation, all things analog, and nostalgia. Her creative mindset fuels her work in both business and cybersecurity, allowing her to approach problem-solving in unconventional and effective ways.
Beyond the digital world, Denis finds balance in nature, maintaining an orchard and caring for over 50 pet chickens—a grounding contrast to her fast-paced career.
