J. Cole has made a quiet yet impactful return with a fresh track titled “cLOUDs,” dropped exclusively on his blog, The Algorithm. Following a recent post where he hinted at being “locked in” and focused on making new music, the 40-year-old rapper came through with an unexpected surprise for his fans.
In a candid message on the blog, Cole shared the backstory behind the track. He revealed that he had created the song just a few days ago, initially without a title. After adding a second verse, he decided, “I got a blog now, I can put whatever I want up there,” and thus, “cLOUDs” was born.
On the song’s intense and atmospheric beat, Cole delivers powerful verses, including lines like, “I’m that bass in your trunk, the bullet that missed Trump / The gun that jammed ’cause it seemed God had other plans.” The track features reflective and impactful lyrics as he touches on themes of trauma, forgiveness, and survival, including the line, “The son of man extending his hand to Son Of Sam.”
“cLOUDs” marks Cole’s first release since his April 2024 mixtape Might Delete Later, which included a diss track aimed at Kendrick Lamar titled “7 Minute Drill.”
