Beyoncé is stepping up to support Los Angeles communities affected by devastating wildfires, donating $2.5 million to assist in the recovery efforts.
The donation comes through her charitable organization, BeyGood, which recently launched the LA Fire Relief Fund. The fund will specifically benefit families in Pasadena and Altadena who have lost their homes in the recent wildfires, as well as local churches and community centers helping with immediate relief needs.
A post shared on the BeyGood Instagram page read, “Los Angeles, we stand with you. 🫶🏽,” announcing the substantial contribution. The funds will directly assist residents of Altadena and Pasadena, including those whose generational homes have been destroyed. Many of these families had called the area home for decades, with some homes passed down through multiple generations.
The wildfires, which have been raging since last week, have scorched nearly 40,000 acres of land, killing at least 24 people and forcing more than 100,000 people to evacuate. Among the largest fires are the Palisades Fire, which has burned 23,000 acres and is only 11% contained, and the Eaton Fire, which has destroyed 15,000 acres and is 27% contained. The Eaton Fire has hit the historically Black community of Altadena especially hard. The neighborhood, a haven for Black families seeking homeownership since the Civil Rights movement, has been devastated by the destruction of numerous homes, many of which have deep family histories.
Sheila Foster, an Altadena resident who lost her home, expressed the gravity of the situation, noting, “This will [displace] a lot of Black people… Some of them are elderly, some were barely holding on before the fire, trying to keep their property because it was going down from generation to generation.”
Altadena, which is home to a diverse population—nearly half of which is people of color—has felt the impact of the fires deeply, with significant losses among the Black, Latino, and Asian communities.
Beyoncé’s generous donation highlights the ongoing need for support in these affected areas, as recovery efforts continue.
