Beautycounter, a pioneering brand in the realm of “clean beauty,” has long been known for its minimalist packaging and meticulously tested formulas. Founded in Santa Monica, the company has been at the forefront of the movement towards safer skincare products, even before it gained widespread popularity on platforms like TikTok. Now, Beautycounter is extending its commitment to clean beauty with the launch of its first fragrance collection, Clean Eau de Parfum.
In an exclusive interview with Bazaar, Gregg Renfrew, the founder and CEO of Beautycounter, emphasizes how the new fragrance collection aligns with the brand’s ethos of producing non-toxic products. Renfrew describes the Clean Eau de Parfum collection as a testament to the brand’s disruptive and innovative nature, as well as its leadership in the clean beauty space.
Recognizing the challenge consumers face in navigating the often complex and opaque world of fragrance ingredients, Beautycounter undertook extensive testing of over 300 natural and synthetic ingredients to ensure they were safe for both skin and the environment. Renfrew highlights the collaboration with Clement Marx of Robertet Group, a renowned “nose,” over the past decade as instrumental in bringing the fragrance collection to life.
The Clean Eau de Parfum collection comprises five distinct scents, each reflecting Beautycounter’s sustainable principles and offering a range of olfactory experiences. From bright citrus-forward perfumes to subtle sensual blends, the collection aims to cater to diverse preferences.
Sun Spill, for instance, features a refreshing blend of grapefruit, neroli, rose, jasmine, coriander, and vetiver, culminating in a warm, spicy finish. Miles Away offers a woody, herbal fragrance with notes of lemon, bergamot, chamomile, jasmine, cedarwood, sandalwood, and vetiver. Hyper Rose presents a whimsical floral bouquet of gardenia, tuberose, jasmine, and rose, which happens to be Renfrew’s personal favorite. Second Skin offers a soft, barely-there scent with vanilla creme and sandalwood undertones, while Pacific Dreams transports wearers to the seaside with its aquatic and musky notes.
Importantly, Beautycounter’s Clean Eau de Parfum collection has received Environmental Working Group certification, making it only the second fragrance brand to achieve this distinction. Renfrew underscores the significance of this certification, emphasizing the brand’s commitment to ingredient transparency and avoiding harmful chemicals. During the formulation process, Beautycounter identified over 60 new ingredients to add to its Never List, which now comprises more than 2,800 questionable or harmful chemicals that the company pledges to avoid.
Overall, Beautycounter’s foray into perfumery with the Clean Eau de Parfum collection reinforces its dedication to providing consumers with safe, high-quality, and environmentally conscious products, further solidifying its position as a leader in the clean beauty movement.
