The NCAA tournament is always filled with surprises, upsets, and Cinderella stories, but this year the Arizona Wildcats have a great shot at doing something special, according to ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas.
The Wildcats are a No. 5 seed in the South Region and will face No. 12 seed UC Santa Barbara in the first round. While many experts see this as a potential upset, Bilas believes that Arizona has the talent and experience to make a deep run in the tournament. One of the key reasons for Bilas’ optimism is the Wildcats’ strong finish to the season. Arizona won seven of their final nine games, including a run to the Pac-12 tournament championship game, where they fell to Oregon State.
But it’s not just their recent form that has Bilas excited. The Wildcats boast a talented roster that includes guard James Akinjo, who was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year, and forward Azuolas Tubelis, who was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team.
In addition to their star players, Bilas also points to the Wildcats’ depth and versatility as reasons for their potential success. Arizona has 10 players who average double-digit minutes per game, and head coach Sean Miller has shown a willingness to mix up his lineups and play different styles of basketball. Of course, the NCAA tournament is never easy, and Arizona will have to navigate a tough path to make a deep run. If they get past UC Santa Barbara, they could face a potential matchup with No. 4 seed Florida State in the second round, followed by potential games against No. 1 seed Baylor or No. 2 seed Ohio State in the Sweet 16.
But for Bilas, it all comes down to belief. If the Wildcats can maintain their confidence and belief in their abilities, they have a great shot at doing something special this March. “The Arizona Wildcats have a chance to make a run,” Bilas said. “They have great talent, they’ve got great experience, they’ve got great depth, and they’ve got a great coach. I think they can do something special.”
