In a recent interview with Don Lemon, Elon Musk tackled questions regarding content moderation, hate speech, and free speech on his social media platform, X. The conversation, taped earlier this month, shed light on Musk’s perspectives on these contentious issues.

Lemon delved into various topics, including Musk’s past drug use, his associations with Donald Trump, and advertisers withdrawing from X. The interview also touched upon hate speech on the platform, with Lemon questioning why certain posts, including antisemitic tweets, remained undeleted.

When pressed on content moderation, Musk emphasized that posts are only removed from X if they violate the law. He clarified that while he doesn’t condone hate speech, the presence of such content on the platform doesn’t equate to promotion. Musk asserted his commitment to adhering to legal standards and highlighted X’s community guidelines to combat misinformation.

Regarding his own responsibility in platform moderation, Musk emphasized X’s algorithm-driven approach and denied any increase in hate speech under his ownership. He stated that his primary focus is on legal compliance rather than subjective content moderation.

The conversation also touched upon the concept of free speech on X, particularly in relation to advertisers pulling their ads from the platform. Musk defended advertisers’ freedom to choose where to advertise, framing it as an exercise of free speech.

In essence, the interview provided insights into Musk’s stance on content moderation and free speech, highlighting his commitment to legal compliance while navigating the complexities of managing a social media platform.
