Steven Spielberg and his wife, Kate Capshaw, have generously donated over $1 million to support those affected by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Their contribution adds to the growing list of celebrities who have stepped forward to assist during this challenging time.
Since May, Spielberg and Capshaw have contributed a total of $1.5 million to the Entertainment Community Fund (ECF) and the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Emergency Financial Assistance Program. The ECF, formerly known as the Actors Fund, is dedicated to providing essential support to individuals working in the entertainment and performing arts industry. With the help of these donations, the fund has been able to assist film and TV workers in covering their basic living expenses. To date, the ECF has distributed more than $6.5 million, providing weekly financial aid ranging from $400,000 to $700,000.
Similarly, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation focuses on offering financial assistance and educational programs to members of the performers union. Due to the ongoing work stoppage, the foundation has been processing 50 to 100 new applications for emergency financial aid. This aid helps members with crucial expenses such as rent, mortgage payments, utilities, food, and medical needs.
Spielberg and Capshaw’s generous contribution aligns with the efforts of other notable figures in the industry. Greg Berlanti and Ryan Murphy have each pledged $500,000 to support the cast and crew of their respective projects. Additionally, filmmaker Paul Feig has donated $100,000 to the Motion Picture and Television Fund’s Community Care Fund.
In addition to individual contributions, organizations have also stepped up to assist those impacted by the strikes. The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) has donated a substantial $4 million to various funds over the past few months. Furthermore, Pay Up Hollywood’s Hollywood Support Staff Relief Fund, originally established during the pandemic, has been relaunched by Liz Hsiao Lan Alper. This fund specifically aims to provide support to staff members such as writers room assistants and production assistants.
The collective efforts of these individuals, organizations, and industry professionals demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting those affected by the ongoing strikes and ensuring the well-being of the entertainment community during this challenging period.
