An ultra-affordable, no-frills EV designed for real life—and real people.
There’s a new disruptor in town. American electric vehicle startup Slate has officially unveiled its first model—a radically simple, fully electric pickup truck with a starting price of under $20,000 USD after federal incentives.
Meet the Slate Truck: a clean-sheet design focused on affordability, modularity, and everyday practicality. It’s not here to impress with over-the-top tech or luxury trimmings. Instead, Slate is offering something almost unheard of in today’s EV market—value and versatility.
Bare-Bones, Yet Built for Purpose
The standard truck is equipped with a 52.7-kWh battery, offering an estimated 150-mile range, rear-wheel drive, and a 1,400-pound payload capacity. For those needing more mileage, a larger 84.3-kWh battery boosts the range to 240 miles.
Despite its stripped-down build—think crank windows, steel wheels, and no touchscreen—Slate hasn’t skimped on safety. Each model comes standard with Forward Collision Warning, up to eight airbags, and solid crash protection.
Modular Magic: From Truck to SUV
Where Slate really shakes things up is its modular platform. With over 100 accessories and a DIY SUV conversion kit, drivers can literally transform the truck into a five-seat SUV—complete with a rear bench, roll cage, and added safety features.
And when it comes to style? Forget permanent paint jobs. The truck’s body is designed to be easily wrapped, unwrapped, and rewrapped, letting owners change up its look as often as their wardrobe.
No Infotainment, No Problem
In one of its boldest moves, Slate has completely ditched the traditional infotainment system. Instead, the dashboard features a universal phone mount and USB ports, inviting drivers to “bring your own tech.”
Made in the USA, Sold Direct
Production will take place in a U.S.-based factory, with Slate adopting a direct-to-consumer model and promising nationwide service. Preorders are now live for just $50 at the company’s official website.
For anyone who’s felt priced out of the EV revolution—or tired of unnecessary tech—the Slate Truck might just be the most exciting launch of the year.
