A rare icon of motorsport history is heading to auction, as RM Sotheby’s prepares to offer a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight—chassis 9113600446—through its exclusive Sealed Drop platform.
One of just 200 factory-built M471 “Lightweight” models, and even more exclusive as one of only 17 right-hand drive examples, this RS 2.7 was originally delivered to privateer racer Dan Margulies. The car made its competitive debut at the 1973 Targa Florio, finishing 18th overall and 4th in class with co-driver Andrew Hedges.
Following its circuit racing career, the car took on a second life in rallying. Piloted by Irish rally greats including Reggie McSpadden and Esler Crawford, it was a regular fixture in Irish motorsport throughout the late 1970s. Its greatest success came with an outright victory in the 1977 Ulster Rally.
In the 1990s, Porsche specialist Francis Tuthill carried out a full restoration, returning the car to its period-correct Comstock Racing livery. Since then, the 911 has remained in long-term private ownership and shows fewer than 52,300 miles from new.
Chassis 0446 is offered with remarkable documentation that includes the original AFN invoice, race entry forms, and even the scrutineering sticker from the Targa Florio. These elements add to the vehicle’s extraordinary provenance and appeal.
Combining rarity, a winning motorsport pedigree, and outstanding preservation, this RS 2.7 Lightweight stands as one of the most collectible and historically significant 911s ever produced. Auction results remain pending, but expectations are high for this motorsport treasure.
