Michella Filipowitz’s Journey to a More Inclusive Society

Michella Filipowitz’s life has been a journey of understanding, acceptance, and advocacy. As a successful businesswoman, model, and philanthropist, she has dedicated herself to promoting the importance of diversity and inclusion, particularly when it comes to supporting children with disabilities. Through her own experiences, Michella has learned that our differences can be a source of strength, and she is committed to fostering a more inclusive society.

At the age of 23, Michella’s life changed forever when she became a single mother to her son, Benjamin. By the time he was three, Benjamin was diagnosed with autism, a revelation that brought both challenges and profound insights. “Initially, I struggled to accept it because no one in my family had a disability,” she shares. But with the unwavering support of her mother, Michella navigated this new reality and came to embrace the unique qualities that made Benjamin who he is.

Benjamin’s autism is a hidden disability, a condition that is not immediately visible but can significantly impact a person’s life. For Benjamin, this manifests as a speech delay. “His brain waves don’t connect in the usual way, and while you might not see it on the surface, it becomes clear when you compare his development to other children’s,” Michella explains. “Watching him struggle to reach milestones that came easily to others was heartbreaking.”

One of the most challenging aspects of raising a child with a hidden disability was seeing how Benjamin was excluded from social interactions at school. “It was painful to see him playing alone while the other kids played together,” Michella recalls. However, this experience opened her eyes to the broader issue of how society treats children with disabilities. It fueled her determination to raise awareness and advocate for inclusion.

In today’s world, where appearances often dictate perceptions, it’s easy to make assumptions about others without understanding their struggles. Michella is passionate about challenging these assumptions and encouraging society to celebrate differences rather than fear them. “We live in a world that often values conformity, but it’s our differences that make us stronger,” she says. “Judging someone without knowing their story only perpetuates misunderstanding and exclusion.”

A significant part of Michella’s advocacy focuses on the education system. She has observed that many mainstream schools are reluctant to accept children with disabilities, particularly those on the autism spectrum, fearing that they may disrupt the learning environment. “Too often, these children are placed in special schools, which can isolate them from their peers,” she notes. “But that’s not the solution.”

Michella believes that children with disabilities should be integrated into mainstream classrooms where they can learn alongside their peers. “Children need to understand diversity from a young age,” she emphasizes. “They should be taught to respect and appreciate each other’s differences, to be kind, and to include everyone, regardless of their abilities.”

Her vision extends beyond individual classrooms. Michella dreams of an education system where inclusivity is the norm, not the exception. “We need to create an environment where every child feels valued and supported,” she says. “My goal is for schools to embrace and integrate children with disabilities, ensuring they have the same opportunities as their peers.”

To bring this vision to life, Michella co-founded the DR Family Foundation with her fiancé. The foundation is dedicated to supporting children with disabilities and their families by providing financial assistance for school fees and other essential resources. “As a single mother, I faced many challenges, from navigating the healthcare system to managing the costs of therapies and treatments,” she explains. “I realized that many families don’t have the same resources I did, and I wanted to help fill that gap.”

The foundation’s work goes beyond financial assistance. Michella and her team are also working on establishing a home for children who come from difficult family situations. “We want to provide a safe and nurturing environment for these kids,” she says. “Some of them are dealing with incredibly challenging circumstances, and they need a place where they can feel secure and supported.”

Michella’s journey as a mother has deeply influenced her outlook on life. “Benjamin has taught me so much,” she reflects. “He’s helped me become more empathetic, more aware, and more determined to make a difference. I want to use what I’ve learned to help other families who are going through similar struggles.”

Through the DR Family Foundation, Michella is committed to building a community where every child is celebrated for who they are. “We need to move away from a mindset of exclusion and towards one of inclusion,” she says. “Our differences are what make us unique, and it’s time we start celebrating them.”

Michella Filipowitz’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have when they dedicate themselves to a cause. By embracing diversity and advocating for inclusion, Michella is helping to create a brighter future for all children.
