KENZO is set to make a stylish statement at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris by outfitting the French Judo Team in custom-designed apparel inspired by the sport’s Japanese heritage. Creative director Nigo has crafted special Kimono-inspired suits, drawing inspiration from designs that were showcased on the House’s Fall/Winter 2023 runway.
The Kimono holds deep cultural significance in Japan, evolving significantly since its inception in the 8th century. KENZO emphasized its enduring relevance, particularly during Japan’s Edo era, known for economic prosperity, cultural flourishing, and widespread use of the Kimono across ages and social strata.
In judo, the Kimono, or “gi,” has undergone its own evolution. Originally designed with lighter fabrics, modern adaptations feature thicker materials to enhance grip and stability. The silhouette has also evolved to support enhanced mobility in traditional Japanese practice.
Nigo’s innovative approach merges Eastern and Western influences, celebrating the French Judo Team’s achievements on the global sports stage. Both the French Olympic and Paralympic judo teams will proudly wear the KENZO Kimono suits during official events throughout the Summer Games.
