In a dramatic turn of events in the ongoing legal battle between tech giants Apple and Epic Games, Apple has terminated Epic Games’ developer account. This decision comes amidst a contentious legal dispute that has been unfolding since August 2020, when Epic Games challenged Apple’s practices regarding in-app purchases on the App Store.
The conflict began when Epic Games attempted to circumvent Apple’s policy of taking a 30% cut from in-game purchases by implementing its own in-app payment system for Fortnite. In response, Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store, leading to a legal showdown between the two companies.
The recent passing of the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), aimed at promoting fairness in the tech industry, compelled Apple to allow Fortnite back on iOS devices. However, instead of reinstating the game on the App Store, Epic Games announced plans to launch its own marketplace, the Epic Games Store, for its titles.
Under the DMA, Apple was obligated to approve Epic Games’ developer account, as it mandates the allowance of third-party app stores. Yet, Apple’s abrupt termination of Epic’s account in Sweden has raised eyebrows and sparked further controversy.
Epic Games expressed shock and dismay at Apple’s actions, accusing the tech giant of violating the DMA and obstructing fair competition on iOS devices. The termination of Epic’s developer account effectively prevents the development of the Epic Games Store for iOS, according to Epic’s blog post addressing the situation.
The catalyst for Apple’s decision appears to be a thread posted on X by Epic CEO Tim Sweeney, in which he criticized Apple’s practices. Apple’s lawyers cited Sweeney’s remarks as well as Epic’s past actions as grounds for terminating the developer account.
This latest development underscores the escalating tensions between Apple and Epic Games and highlights the broader implications of their legal dispute. As both companies continue to navigate the complex terrain of antitrust regulations and competition in the digital marketplace, the outcome of their conflict remains uncertain.
