Tips for Successfully Planning, Budgeting and Executing your Summer Travel

Building financial health and exploring the world are two common resolutions that many individuals aspire to achieve. We all have that itch to discover new places and, at the same time, get our finances in the best shape. It seems like a game of tug-of-war between wanderlust and money sense, right? But guess what? It’s totally doable.

Valentino Danchev, tourism veteran and founder of Fidelis Marketing Group which oversees the top resorts in Latin America, has witnessed travel plans both succeed and not live up to expectations due to finances. Below, he offers his tips to practice before and during your trip in order to effectively manage your expenses, save money, and make your travel dreams a reality.

    Map your Adventure and Wallet

The secret of a stress-free holiday? The right amount of prep work. Dive headfirst into researching your dream locale, and don’t forget to factor in the time of your visit because peak seasons can seriously spike those prices. Next, chart out the big stuff – your rides, your bed for the night, and what you’ll be munching on for brunch. Add in those ‘just might happen’ costs too. Having this money game plan means you’re not going to blow your budget, and you can relax and enjoy your trip knowing there’s enough in the bank.

    Create a Travel Fund

Ever thought of having a ‘vacation vault’? No, not a physical safe, but a dedicated savings account or a separate stash just for your trips. Believe it or not, some banks offer special accounts just for this purpose – it’s like a piggy bank for your travel dreams. Keep adding to these accounts every payday, resist the urge to dip into them, and watch your travel bucks pile up.

Set Goals and Establishing Saving Habits

We all know that floating idea of ‘someday I’ll visit…’ But how about we take that ‘someday’ and circle a date on the calendar? Set concrete goals for your travel wishlist, figure out how long you’ll need to save for each trip, and decide on a savings rhythm that works for you – maybe that’s putting aside money every week or every paycheck. Then stick to it like clockwork and the dreams will soon become plans.

    Play the Currency Game

Heading off to a place where the money looks different? Turn into a currency sleuth a few months before your trip. Keep tabs on how your dollar stacks up against the local currency at different banks. You might even catch the perfect moments when the exchange rates tip in your favor!

Create and Follow a Daily Budget

When you finally hit the road, that’s when the fun begins – and where a daily budget comes in handy. Tally up the day’s expenses, from food and tickets to that must-have magnet for your fridge. This way, you’re spreading your savings smoothly over your trip, not splurging on day one and eating ramen noodles for the rest of the week. A little bit of budget discipline makes for a guilt-free vacation!

    Seek Discounts on Attractions

Many cities have city passes, or bundle deals on popular attractions. Consider it like a buffet – you get more for less compared to buying tickets separately. And if summer travel isn’t a must, consider waiting until the colder months! Winter often brings its own set of discounts, especially in the cooler areas.

    Avoid Impulsive Purchases

We’ve all been there. You’re in a new place, everything looks shiny and exciting, and you’re in vacation spending-mode. Instead, try exercising some retail discipline. Do a quick Google search and check out if that ‘must-have’ item is really worth it or if it’s just a tourist-trap item. Cutting down on spur-of-the-moment splurges can save you money to enjoy those true local specialties.

    Utilize Public Transportation

Most cities are well-equipped with efficient and cost-effective public transportation systems. Rather than taking a taxi or private car, research where the nearest station is, how to buy a ticket, and the best routes to take you where you want to go. Utilizing public transport can significantly reduce your expenses, allowing you to allocate more funds towards experiencing your travel destination.

No matter what your travel dreams look like, it’s all about having a game plan and patience. Getting your finances on track and globetrotting doesn’t happen overnight. But, these tips can put you on the right path to mastering your money matters and checking off places from your travel bucket list. Closely monitor your spending, learn to budget, and always be on the lookout for a good deal. In the end, it’s all about balancing your wanderlust with your wallet, and with a little determination, anyone can do just that.
