French luxury brand Marithé + François Girbaud, renowned for their avant-garde approach to denim, is entering the mainstream with an exciting new collaboration with streetwear powerhouse Supreme. Founded in 1972 by the visionary designers François Girbaud and Marithé Bachellere, the label has always been ahead of its time, especially with their experimental denim techniques that forever changed the fashion industry.
The duo’s partnership began in the 1960s at Western House, a Parisian clothing shop specializing in utilitarian denim. It was here that Marithé and François began pushing the boundaries of traditional denim by experimenting with washes at local laundromats to achieve the perfect fit and fade. Their innovative work led to the introduction of pre-wash denim, which quickly became a hit. They were also pioneers in creating treatments like stonewashing and laser engraving, both of which became iconic in the fashion world. By 1968, they had opened their own design studio, focusing on denim, moleskin, and corduroy fabrics. Their unique aging techniques and worn-in styles set them apart, and they eventually expanded into other categories, including knitwear, sportswear, children’s clothing, and a specialized leather line.
In the early ’80s, Marithé + François made their mark on the American market with their baggy jeans, featuring their signature X-pocket construction that disrupted the traditional five-pocket style. This rebellious approach to denim was just the beginning. Throughout the ’90s, they continued to innovate, introducing their “Shuttle” jeans inspired by space-cut designs.
Now, Marithé + François Girbaud’s denim expertise is being spotlighted in a collaboration with Supreme, bringing the brand’s legacy into the modern day. The collection, centered around denim, includes a diverse range of pieces: a Leather Flight Bomber Jacket, Denim Trucker Jacket, Down Puffer Vest, Hockey Jersey, Hooded Sweatshirt, Leather Cargo Pant, Baggy Jean, Sweatpant, Denim Shorts, Tee, Camp Cap, Beanie, Tote Bag, and even a Towel. The denim jackets and pants come in various washes and colors, but stay true to Marithé + François Girbaud’s iconic treatments while reflecting Supreme’s oversized silhouettes, bold camo graphics, and signature co-branding.
This collaboration is a nod to the impact Marithé + François Girbaud has had on the denim industry over the decades. With Supreme’s streetwear influence, this release elevates classic denim staples with a modern twist, making it accessible to a broader audience.
The Supreme x Marithé + François Girbaud Spring 2025 collection will be available for global release starting April 3 via the official Supreme webstore, with availability in Asia on April 5. This collaboration marks an exciting fusion of high-end craftsmanship and streetwear culture, solidifying Marithé + François Girbaud’s legacy in the mainstream fashion world.
