Each year in the United States, National Jamaican Patty Day falls on the first Saturday in August. It’s a day for longtime patty enthusiasts to celebrate a beloved treat and for others to discover their new favorite food. Juici Patties, the international Jamaican patty restaurant chain, had big plans to honor the tradition this year.
On August 3 this year, Juici Patties celebrated by serving and uplifting the community — and, of course, through introducing more people to the beloved Jamaican patty.
For those unfamiliar, the Jamaican patty is a hearty, turnover-style food whose history is a cultural melting pot. It’s a descendant of the United Kingdom’s beloved Cornish pasty which is a similarly savory pastry filled with ground meat and vegetables. As British colonists came to Jamaica and surrounding islands, they brought the pasties with them.
Of course, the pasty was a bit mild for most Jamaicans. Before long, it was spiced up with the Scotch bonnet pepper, a flaming-hot pepper native to Jamaica and used in many of their dishes.
As African slaves arrived in Jamaica, they brought cayenne pepper with them, while Indian indentured servants brought cumin and curry. These exotic spices were fused and incorporated into the patty, transcending it into the one-of-a-kind treat we know today.
Daniel Chin, son of Juici Patties founder Jukie Chin and CEO of the company’s U.S. division, grew up enjoying patties in the heart of Jamaica — and he wants to introduce the wildly popular delicacy to a wider audience in the United States, too.
“I’m passionate about bringing tastes from Jamaica to the U.S. and bringing this to people who have or haven’t had the opportunity to physically go to Jamaica,” he says.
There’s nothing quite like an authentic Jamaican patty, and Juici Patties is a restaurant aiming to take that flavor worldwide. The patties are made using Jukie Chin’s family recipe, just as they were in the very beginnings of the business.
“He started his own business when he was 16, making patties by hand in his mother’s kitchen and was selling them in his parents’ little grocery store for a year,” Daniel says. “When he was 17, he moved out of his parents’ shop and opened his own restaurant in May Pen, a town in central Jamaica.”
Jukie opened five locations in Jamaica. And in 1992, Juici Patties began franchising, and that’s when the company grew exponentially. Within a couple of decades, Juici Patties was Jamaica’s largest chain restaurant.
“We have 65 restaurants in Jamaica, and roughly two-thirds are franchised,” says Daniel. “One-third are corporate-owned.”
Daniel joined the company 10 years ago and finally achieved his vision of bringing Juici Patties to the United States. The company is already making a splash in Florida, although Daniel hopes that, one day, there will be at least one Juici Patties location in every state.
This Jamaican Patty Day, Daniel hopes the restaurant will have a community impact beyond the culinary world.
Since 2004, Juici Patties has hosted a youth leadership workshop in Jamaica. It’s a program involving young people in thoughtful discussions and community service initiatives — in 2023, participants renovated a computer room for a primary school.
Juici Patties is committed to community service in Jamaica, including its Elderly Soup Feeding Programme, where staff volunteers create a mobile soup kitchen to serve elderly people in nursing homes. Initiated as cherished projects by Edith Chin, these programs continue to thrive under her legacy of compassion and community care. The restaurant also strengthens Jamaican communities by supporting local farmers who supply fresh produce to its restaurants. Daniel is dedicated to these initiatives in Jamaica and continually works to strengthen these local partnerships.
Under Daniel’s guidance, Juici Patties is bringing more than an authentically delicious treat to the U.S. By focusing on community engagement and creating positive impact programs in Jamaica, Juici Patties aims to make a difference at every location they serve.
The expansion into the United States is a major move for Juici Patties, and National Jamaican Patty Day marks the perfect occasion to celebrate!
