Dyson is venturing into the audio realm with its first-ever audio-only headphones, the OnTrac. This new launch marks a departure from its previous hybrid model, the Dyson Zone, which combined headphones with an air purifier and drew considerable attention earlier this year. The OnTrac, however, is designed solely for superior sound quality, showcasing Dyson’s commitment to audio innovation.
The OnTrac headphones boast advanced active noise-cancelling (ANC) technology, which Dyson claims is “best-in-class.” The headphones are equipped with eight high-precision microphones that capture external sounds 384,000 times per second. This data is processed by a new custom ANC algorithm, enabling the OnTrac to effectively cancel up to 40dB of ambient noise. Additionally, the MyDyson app (available for iOS and Android) allows users to monitor their noise exposure and promote healthier listening habits.
Battery life is another highlight of the OnTrac. With ANC activated, users can expect up to 55 hours of playback—a figure that rivals the top offerings from competitors like Cambridge Audio’s Melomania P100, which offers 60 hours. Dyson’s innovative design places the batteries in the headband, contributing to a slim profile that balances functionality with aesthetics.
One of the most exciting features of the OnTrac is its extensive customization options. Users can personalize their headphones with interchangeable caps and ear cushions, available in over 2,000 color combinations. These elements are easy to swap out without the need for special tools, allowing for a personalized touch.
Dyson’s entry into the headphone market underscores its longstanding expertise in acoustics and noise reduction, honed over decades through the development of its renowned vacuum cleaners and hairdryers. The OnTrac is priced at £449 GBP / $499 USD, with replacement caps and cushions starting at £49 GBP / $49 USD. For those interested, sign up on Dyson’s website to be notified of the official launch.
