A closer look at Neuraé and the science behind skincare that boosts your mood

The next time you’re tempted to splurge on a new serum or face oil, science might just be on your side. Skincare isn’t only about smoother skin or fighting signs of aging—some formulas are now designed to elevate your mood and emotional well-being.

That’s the concept behind Neuraé, a new skincare brand blending neuroscience with beauty. Created by Philippe and Christine d’Ornano, long-time executives at Sisley, Neuraé is part of a growing trend in neurocosmetics—products designed to benefit both your skin and your state of mind.

“The ritual of a regular self-care routine can improve mental health as a form of mindfulness,” says NYC dermatologist Blair Murphy-Rose, emphasizing the power of sensory inputs like fragrance and texture.

    What Is Neurocosmetic Skincare?

At the heart of Neuraé’s innovation is the skin-brain connection—a growing area of research exploring how skincare can impact emotional health. The brand’s formulas are rooted in over a decade of clinical research and focus on three key components:

    • Neuro-ingredients: Active compounds that help transmit positive signals to the brain while minimizing stress responses in the skin
    • Neuro-textures: Products designed with ultra-soothing, luxe textures that stimulate the senses
    • Neuro-fragrances: Scents formulated to trigger feel-good responses, like relaxation or uplifted moods

According to Dr. Alia Ahmed, a dermatologist and expert in psychodermatology, “Neurocosmetic ingredients can reduce redness, improve hydration, calm the skin, and even impact pain perception.”

Key Ingredients That Work From the Inside Out

Neuraé’s formulas incorporate skullcap extract (a natural anxiety reducer), eperua (an anti-inflammatory botanical), and red ginseng, a known adaptogen that supports stress resilience.

“Even the feel of a product—how it melts into the skin or how it smells—can trigger serotonin or oxytocin,” explains Pauline Poussin, Neuraé’s scientific communications manager.

Neuroscientist Rachel Herz adds that the scent of skincare can even influence facial muscle tension: “If a user finds a product’s scent calming, their muscles may relax while applying it, enhancing the experience.”

How Does Neuraé Work? A Look at the Product Line

Neuraé organizes its collection into three mood-based pillars:

    • Joie (Joy)
    • Énergie (Energy)
    • Sérénité (Serenity)

Each pillar includes a hydrating moisturizer and a fragrance rollerball, designed to enhance mood through scent. Their standout product, Harmonie The Serum, is loved for its lightweight texture, zesty scent, and fresh finish. Recently, they launched Harmonie The Oil, a glow-enhancing face oil that blends nourishment with sensory satisfaction.

    🌿 Shop Top Neuraé Picks:

    • Harmonie The Serum – $195
    • Joie / Énergie / Sérénité Creams – $170 each
    • Emotion Boosters (Fragrance Rollers) – $65
    • Harmonie The Oil – $180

Available at neurae.com, Neiman Marcus, and Bergdorf Goodman.

Does Skincare Really Affect Your Mood?

While more clinical data is still needed, experts agree that skin health and emotional health are deeply connected. A clear, glowing complexion can lead to increased confidence, while the sensory act of skincare can serve as a daily mindfulness ritual.

“What makes Neuraé unique is that it starts at the skin, but ultimately helps uplift your emotional state,” says Christine d’Ornano.

Even Monica Ha, co-founder of fragrance-forward body care brand Baude, emphasizes this link: “Anything we smell hits our brain first—it’s our most emotional sense.”
