In one of the most anticipated tech collaborations of 2025, Apple and SpaceX have joined forces to bring Starlink satellite access to iPhones, marking a major breakthrough for mobile connectivity. The partnership, unveiled as part of the latest iOS 18.3 update, integrates Starlink’s satellite network into iPhones, providing a game-changing alternative to Apple’s previous satellite-communication service.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has been working in secret with SpaceX and T-Mobile US to add support for Starlink, a move that promises to drastically enhance off-grid communication. This update, which is expected to revolutionize how users stay connected when out of range of traditional networks, allows iPhone users to send texts via satellite even in remote areas.
In a post on X, Mario Nawfal, founder of IBC Group, highlighted the significance of the update: “Apple just opened iPhone doors to Starlink’s satellite network, giving users an alternative to their Globalstar service for off-grid communication. The key difference? No more pointing your phone at the sky – Starlink works right from your pocket.” For now, the feature supports text messaging, but SpaceX and T-Mobile have plans to extend the capability to include voice calls and data connections in the future. Musk clarified that while the current generation of Starlink’s direct-to-phone constellation supports text messaging, the next-gen system will be capable of medium-resolution video streaming as well.
A select group of T-Mobile users with iPhone 14 or later models are currently testing the beta version of this update. Those in the program have received a notification allowing them to activate the satellite feature, which is managed through a new toggle in the iPhone’s cellular settings. Users can access the satellite feature for texting, but voice calls and data connections are slated to be added soon.
Currently, this Starlink connectivity is only available to iPhone users in the U.S., but as SpaceX and T-Mobile continue to expand the service, more regions and capabilities are expected to roll out in the coming months. This collaboration between Apple and SpaceX is sure to shake up the world of mobile communication, particularly in areas with limited access to traditional network infrastructure.
