YouTube is poised to make a significant stride in the realm of immersive technology with reports emerging of the platform’s plans to develop a native app for the Apple Vision Pro headset. This move marks a pivotal shift in strategy, as Google had previously indicated that it would not immediately create a dedicated app for the Apple headset.
According to a recent report from The Verge, a spokesperson for YouTube confirmed that the company’s roadmap includes the development of an app native to the Vision Pro’s operating system. This announcement comes after Google’s initial stance last month, where it expressed reluctance to create a dedicated app for the Vision Pro.
“We’re excited to see Vision Pro launch and we’re supporting it by ensuring YouTube users have a great experience in Safari,” said Jessica Gibby, a representative from YouTube, in an email to The Verge. “We do not have any specific plans to share at this time, but can confirm that a Vision Pro app is on our roadmap.”
The decision to move forward with the creation of a native app follows the launch of an unofficial YouTube app for the Apple headset called Juno, developed by Christian Selig. Selig, a former Apple developer, expressed disappointment in YouTube’s initial reluctance to create a visionOS app, highlighting the gap in user experience when accessing the platform through Safari.
“YouTube is probably one of the parts of the internet I consume the most, so I was more than a little sad when YouTube announced that they don’t have plans to build a visionOS app, and disabled the option to load the iPad app,” wrote Selig in his blog post. He emphasized that while users can still access YouTube through Safari, the experience falls short of being optimized for visionOS.
The development of a native YouTube app for the Vision Pro holds immense promise for users seeking a seamless and immersive viewing experience. While YouTube has yet to make an official announcement regarding the launch of its app on visionOS, the prospect of enhanced accessibility and functionality on the Apple headset is undoubtedly an exciting development for enthusiasts of immersive technology.
As the integration of immersive technology continues to evolve, the collaboration between major platforms like YouTube and innovative hardware like the Apple Vision Pro paves the way for a new era of immersive entertainment experiences. With the promise of a dedicated app on the horizon, users can anticipate an elevated viewing experience that transcends traditional boundaries and immerses them in a world of limitless possibilities.
