Critics on social media, particularly X (formerly Twitter), are calling out the vibrant red and yellow backdrop at Vanity Fair’s 2024 Oscar Party, likening its color scheme to that of McDonald’s fast-food chain.
A plethora of celebrities graced the carpet at the magazine’s prestigious Academy Awards afterparty, including Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Sofia Vergara, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, and his fiancée, Lauren Sanchez. However, instead of the subdued color palettes of recent years, such as the blue-and-silver theme in 2023, this year’s Vanity Fair Oscar Party featured much bolder hues reminiscent of McDonald’s iconic fries packaging.
Some users on X expressed their discontent with the choice of colors, with @kenobisms remarking, “It looks like a big McDonald’s.” Similarly, @Tthasage commented, “Why did Vanity Fair after party choose this red carpet set up. It’s so ugly reminds me of McDonalds and clashes with the clothes.”
Another user on X lamented, “why does vanity fair after party carpet looks like mcdonald’s??? i’m crying what happened.”
This reaction echoes criticism from the 2023 Emmy Awards in January, where Chrissy Teigen took to Instagram to plead for better-looking step and repeats. Many social media users also criticized the large lettering of “Emmys” and “Fox,” which they felt clashed with the stars’ outfits.
Choosing colors for awards show carpets and red carpets is inevitably a subjective matter. Last year’s Oscars saw organizers opt for a pale beige “champagne” colored carpet, which drew mixed reviews. Jamie Lee Curtis even humorously tweeted ahead of the telecast that “their carpet is going to match my drapes.”
