New Rumors Emerge About the Release Date of the Nintendo Switch 2
Update: As we enter the new year, the gaming community is abuzz with speculation about Nintendo’s plans for a successor to the Switch, tentatively named the Switch 2. While rumors about its release date and potential design have come and gone, the rumor mill has been reignited by video game cheat specialists Gameshark, now rebranded as AI Shark.
Digital Trends reported today that a press release from the new AI company suggested that “the official launch [of AI Shark] is planned to coincide with the Nintendo Switch 2 in September 2024.” However, it’s worth noting that this information was later confirmed by an AI Shark spokesperson to be a mere guess. Nevertheless, it serves as the latest lead regarding the console’s launch. We eagerly await official word from Nintendo.
Original Story: Sources with apparent knowledge of Nintendo’s plans recently told VGC that the as-yet-unnamed console would be released in the second half of 2024 and would be portable, similar to the Switch.
While these details don’t provide much to go on, they are more than customers have heard from Nintendo itself. The company has been tight-lipped about its future console plans, with Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa deflecting investor questions about the Switch’s life cycle.
Other news from these anonymous sources includes the possibility of two screen options (OLED and LCD) and a cartridge slot for physical games. There’s currently no word on backward compatibility.
The Switch has sold over 125 million units in its six years on the market and is still capable of supporting major titles like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. However, it has struggled to keep pace with more powerful consoles from Xbox and PlayStation.
