On display at Stems Gallery in Paris, American artist Paul Rouphail’s latest solo exhibition delves into the intriguing history of the credenza, transforming it from an act of faith to a design object. The show, aptly titled, explores themes of faith, fear, and indulgence through a series of new paintings.
Rouphail’s pieces, such as “Credenza (After Carvaggio)” and “Credenza with Flowers,” feature thought-provoking reinterpretations of classic works, infusing them with subtle or provocative elements. His compositions challenge traditional still-life painting, offering genre-bending scenes reminiscent of seventeenth-century European and twentieth-century American landscape art, infused with psychologically and politically charged components that push the boundaries of logical comprehension.
