Performing death screams, zombie groans or battle roars in an announce booth for up to four hours takes a toll on an actor’s vocal cords, according to a survey by ACTRA, Canada’s artists’ union. Canadian actors say their vocal cords suffer temporary or even permanent damage when they perform death screams, zombie groans, or battle roars in an announce booth for two to four hours while doing video game voice-over work.
And they want Canada-based game developers and video game directors to help local actors achieve the same intensity of performance more safely, to give voice to complex, fully drawn characters that still howl and scream constantly while playing, enemies to face those they want to kill.
