Sotheby’s to Auction Iconic Pieces from Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s Wardrobe

Sotheby’s is set to auction a selection of iconic pieces from the wardrobe of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, one of fashion’s most beloved figures. The former publicist for Calvin Klein and wife of John F. Kennedy Jr., who tragically passed away in 1999, is renowned for her minimalist yet polished style that continues to influence modern fashion nearly three decades after her death.

As part of its annual Fashion Icons sale, Sotheby’s will feature three significant garments from Bessette-Kennedy’s private collection. Lucy Bishop, a fashion specialist at Sotheby’s, noted, “There is no greater expression of someone’s life than their clothes.” She emphasized that while much has been written about Bessette-Kennedy’s life and style, few records capture her personal voice. “These garments speak volumes about her tragically short but remarkable life,” Bishop added, highlighting her thoughtful fashion choices and the grace with which she navigated public scrutiny.

The auction will include a single-breasted black Prada coat, a leopard-print faux-fur vintage coat, and a double-breasted jacket by Yohji Yamamoto. Online bidding will take place from November 27 to December 17, with the pieces on display at Sotheby’s New York from December 5 to 10.

These items have been generously donated by RoseMarie Terenzio, who served as Kennedy’s executive assistant and publicist. Terenzio remarked, “Carolyn has left an indelible mark on fashion and on those who knew her. Her pieces are symbols of a woman who continues to inspire style and captivate the public’s imagination. These historical pieces deserve to be cherished and properly preserved to honor Carolyn’s legacy.”
